Transgender Talk Show Host Changing Indian Society

November 29th, 2007 by Babe

In a country where a popular a Tamil actress was slapped with a lawsuit when she broached the subject of premarital sex, and a nightclub was shut down after a photo in a local paper showed a couple kissing, Ippadikku Rose, a transgender talk show host, is changing the face of India’s deep rooted moral taboos.ippadikkurose.jpg

A 28-year-old, American-educated former Web site designer with a master’s degree in biomedical engineering, Rose/Ramesh started wearing women’s clothes full time four years ago and is still waiting for acceptance from her family and society at large.

Rose’s blunt discussions cover everything from workplace harassment, divorce, premarital sex and the benefits of legalizing prostitution. One reason that Ippadikku Rose is able to broach these topics is the low status of transgender people in Indian society. Rose can’t be knocked down any further by the guardians of sexual morals as she is already at the bottom of society’s barrel.

Her viewers might not realize that Rose, in her makeup, bindi and peach-colored sari, was born a boy. But she is not afraid to flaunt her transgender identity. She speaks to viewers from a stage shaped like the symbol of femininity — an O with a plus sign — with the male symbol hanging behind.

Transsexuals in India are known as “hijras” and many are involved in the sexy trade and most are shunned by their families. It’s a dangerous line of work, with the threat of violence from the police and local rowdies who rape them or demand bribes. Indian society never knew how hijras thought and felt. Rose is changing all that.

Transgenders in India are seen as immoral and evil,” Rose said. “I will break that image by being articulate, intelligent and a bit like the girl next door.”
