Transgender Civil Rights At Work In New York
June 6th, 2008 by BabeTo date, transgender activists have scored victories in 13 states with the passage of transgender-inclusive anti-discrimination laws, with another victory scored on June 3rd when the New York State Assembly approved a bill affording civil rights protections to the transgender community.
In the five years since then Governor George Pataki signed the state’s gay rights law which was put under close scrutiny for not protecting gender identity and expression,, there has been an ongoing battle in New York State to expand the human rights law to embrace the transgendered and gender-variant New Yorkers.
The Gender Expression Non-Discrimination Act (GENDA) would bar bias based on gender identity and expression in employment, housing, public accommodations, and access to credit. It would also amend the 2000 hate crimes statute to include gender identity and expression as protected categories.
Hallelujah! Keep on fighting….
