Student Safe Zones For GLBT Community
April 8th, 2010 by BabeIrvine, who is openly gay himself, has begun recruiting Small Living Units to become “safe zones” for the LBGTIQ students as a project for the Lesbian, Bisexual, Gay, Transgender, Intersex or Questioning (LBGTIQ) Resource Center. Irvine has hopes that the Safe Zones will offer a comfortable atmosphere for the students and improve communication between admissions and prospective students.
The “Safe Zone” offers an environment where the LBGTIQ community know they will not be discriminated against for their sexual identity or sexual orientation. SLU members are being asked to place a laminated, pink, upside-down triangle with the words “Safe Zone” written on it in the front window of their houses. On the back of the triangle is a copy of the Ohio Wesleyan Statement of Non-Discrimination.
“This will show the students that the SLU and people living there are accepting and will not pass judgment,” said Irvine. “I thought it would be a good idea to have a visual aid to show them that there are living spaces at our university that are open to all sexualities.”
Samuel Irvine’s endeavours on behalf of the LBGTIQ community on the Ohio campus, is being mirrored across the country in many Colleges and Universites as Safe Zones raise awareness, and correct misinformation on topics of sexual and gender identity.
