Half-Naked Couple Cause Stir Up a Tree

April 19th, 2004 by Babe

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Two gay lovers took off most of their clothes, climbed up a tree in New York’s Central Park and spent four hours engaging in sex acts and yelling abuse at police and fire fighters.

Police said officers talked the men out of the three story high tree on Thursday night after the parks department had sent two cherry-pickers and firefighters had deployed an inflatable rescue mattress.

The couple, described by officials as a 32-year-old transsexual with female breasts wearing a purple thong and a 17-year-old boy in white boxer shorts, were admitted to the hospital for psychiatric evaluation.

At one point during the standoff in the larch tree — an evergreen with pine-like needles — the 32-year-old rejected a police officer’s offer of a can of soda.

“This is a Coke. I wanted vanilla Diet Pepsi,” he was quoted as saying in newspaper reports.

On Friday, police charged William Rund, 32, and Christopher Montero, 17, both of New York, with reckless endangerment, resisting arrest, criminal mischief, public lewdness and disorderly conduct.

Transsexual star to do feminine hygiene ads

April 13th, 2004 by Babe

Transsexual pop star Harisu from Korea has agreed to appear in television and magazine ads for a feminine hygiene product beginning next month, the Chosun Ilbo newspaper reported.

The singer will promote sanitary napkins made by the Taiwanese company UFT. The products incorporate a new technology that is also designed to prevent menstrual cramps.

In Asia, male stars have appeared in commercials for sanitary pads, but transgender people have never before appeared in such feminine hygiene ads, the newspaper reported.

Gwen Smith, a U.S. board member of FTM International, an educational organization serving transgender people, hailed the news as a sign of progress.

“If anything it shows a potential level of acceptance that Harisu is indeed accepted as a woman. For her to do an advertisement for such a product also shows that the advertisers and public do respect who she is, and are willing to have her represent their product,” Smith told the Gay.com/PlanetOut.com Network.

“I don’t think you would see such a thing in the United States in anything short of a comedic or ironic fashion,” she added.
Harisu’s latest single is titled “Foxy Lady,” and she is touring the United States. She was recently named “Korean Artist We’d Most Like to See” by the Los Angeles Korean Chamber of Commerce, Chosun Ilbo reported.

Candidate Pictured in Dresses Loses Race - Transvestite?

April 6th, 2004 by Babe

MICHAEL GRACZYK, Associated Press Writer
HOUSTON - A candidate who stuck to his campaign despite photos showing him wearing dresses has lost his bid for office in Texas runoff elections that also picked GOP candidates for five congressional elections.

Sam Walls, 64, who sought a seat in the Texas House, had said he would not give in to “blackmail” from whoever circulated the photos, saying they tried to use “very old, personal information” to force him out of the race.

Walls, a businessman, had seemed the favorite over real estate broker Rob Orr, but GOP leaders urged him to withdraw after the pictures surfaced, and on Tuesday Orr won with 4,630 votes, or 60 percent, to Walls’ 3,031.

“Some people have said they feel sorry for me, but let me tell you how wonderful it has been for me,” Walls said after his loss. “If you have not had the opportunity to find out that all your friends are true friends, then I feel sorry for you.”

He has said his family had “dealt with” the dress issue, and he apologized to supporters for any embarrassment caused by “a small part of my personal past.”

In the Republican congressional runoffs, the 10th District contest was the most expensive congressional race in the country as political rookies Ben Streusand and Michael McCaul spent a total of $5 million.

McCaul won with help from several high-ranking Texas Republicans and former President George Bush, who hosted a fund-raiser. With 99 percent of the precincts counted, McCaul had 63 percent of the votes.

Since there is no Democratic contender in the Austin-to-Houston district, McCaul will take the seat unless a write-in candidate mounts a well-funded general election challenge.

In the District 17 congressional runoff, state Rep. Arlene Wohlgemuth defeated former Waco school board member Dot Snyder, 54 percent to 46 percent, and will face seven-term Democrat incumbent Rep. Chet Edwards. The district includes President Bush (news - web sites)’s Crawford ranch.

The runoffs came in districts redrawn last year by the GOP-controlled Legislature in a contentious process that included two out-of-state walkouts by the Democrats. The new congressional map could give the Republicans control in November of the state’s Washington delegation, now split 16-16.
